Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico)
Tulum - pre-Columbian city of the Mayan civilization, which served as a port for the Koba city. The ruins are located on the 12-meter cliffs of the Eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. Tulum is one of the most well-preserved coastal cities of Maya sites, nowadays being very popular among tourists. There is little information from the history of the ancient city. It is believed that, situated in the best point on the Caribbean coast, Tulum was a rich trading city, and the main subject of trade were obsidian and jadeite. Tulum is so well preserved to our days because this is almost the only Mayan city that was not abandoned for the arrival of the conquistadors.
This fact and the formidable walls of Tulum lead us to assume that it was the last stronghold of the Mayan Indians in Mexico, but it is not proven. Tulum was previously known as - Zama, meaning “city of Dawn”. The word «tulúm» in the Yucatec language means “fence” or “wall”, and the walls around the city allow to protect it from attacks.
In comparison with other Maya cities archaeological area in Tulum is small. Good preservation of Tulum and its proximity to the modern tourist facilities along the Caribbean coast of Mexico, located along the Caribbean coast of Mexico (the so-called Riviera Maya around Cancun) made this city a popular tourist destination. Buses ride each hour to Tulum, serving a constant stream of tourists. Ruins of Tulum – are one of the most visited archaeological objects of Mexico.
